Writing & Reporting
The summer before my freshman year of high school, I was introduced to a story that would change my perspective on journalism completely: Sarah’s Hope by Eric Adler. The three-part article that ran in the Kansas City Star in 1999 told the story of Sarah Clark, a cheerleader at Schlagle High School, and her uphill battle to survive. Over her four years of high school, Sarah fights family violence, poverty, abandonment, hunger and homelessness all to make it to graduation. The story is heart-wrenching and beautiful and real.
Sarah’s Hope became so popular that the Kansas City Star ran out of copies. But more importantly, the article shared Sarah’s story to people across the city who came together to make a difference in her life. History may not remember Eric Adler, but Sarah Clark will. That’s what I want to do. Tell stories. Scroll through my writing and reporting work to see how I am doing that now as a senior writer at The Daily Tar Heel.

Videography
The summer before sixth grade, at 11 years old, I produced my first broadcast package. It was part of my participation in the Gloria Shields NSPA Media Workshop beginning broadcast class, which I took in hopes of joining my middle school TV news elective. Armed with an iPad and a borrowed laptop, I learned alongside students who were a minimum of four years older than me, and easily more than a foot taller. I was hooked.
Fast forward seven years and I still haven’t been able to shake the broadcast bug. I spent all four years of high school producing video news segments for my school’s online news site, including one that was later aired on the national PBS NewsHour evening broadcast. In 2022, I was named the National Scholastic Press Association’s Broadcast Journalist of the Year for my work. Now, I do contract work for Jostens Renaissance Education, where I have filmed and conducted interviews for three separate video series focused on student mental health and well-being. Below are some of my favorite videos I have produced over my many years as a broadcast journalist.

Design
To me, design has always been about telling a story without words. If a page design or graphic is strong enough, a reader should be able to tell what the topic of the corresponding content is about without ever reading a single word of text.
That has been what I have striven to do in my design work, which ranges from Instagram posts and stories to interactive web content to pages in a print publication. Especially in today’s society, where most people won’t stop to read a full article. The role of an eye-catching design has never been more important. Check out a few instances of when my design work fulfilled this purpose.

Photography
Writing has always come naturally to me, which has served as a good foundation for almost every other skill I have picked up as a journalist. If I could write and ask questions, I could do anything. Except take pictures. Camera settings seemed like a puzzle I would never be able to solve and I didn’t know the first thing about where to stand or how to compose a good shot.
It would have been easy for me to just write off photography as a skill I was not going to master. Luckily, I’ve never been one to take the easy way out. During my senior year of high school, I challenged myself to cover as many events as I could to get out of my comfort zone and improve my photography. I became part of the weekly varsity football coverage team. I learned to shoot theatre, pep rallies, orchestra concerts and basketball games.
